Dr Eric Guazzo is registered with the National Medical Board of Australia as a specialist neurosurgeon. He was born in Ingham and has had a lifelong commitment to providing and improving medical services to the North Queensland area.
Dr Eric Guazzo is credentialed to practice in general neurosurgery, spinal surgery and paediatric neurosurgery and his current scope of practice includes the management of the full range of emergency and elective conditions within this surgical discipline
Dr Eric Guazzo’s fellowship training in neurosurgery from 1987-90 was completed at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane and the Austin Hospital and Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. He was a senior registrar at the Academic Department of Neurosurgery, University of Cambridge, Addenbrooke’s Hospital before accepting a specialist consultant position in that department on the 1st July 1991. On return to Australia in October 1994 he has been in combined public/private neurosurgery practice based in Townsville, North Queensland. Dr Eric Guazzo’s appointment with Queensland health is as Senior Visiting Medical Officer. He is the Director of the Department of Neurosurgery for the North Queensland Region.
Dr Eric Guazzo has had a continuing association with the Neurosurgical Society of Australia since 1989 and has held various roles within the Executive of the Society, including President of the Society. He has particular interest in continuing education and training within the Neurosurgical field and has acted as an Examiner for the Fellowship in neurosurgery (2010 – 2018) He has held positions on various Government and Community advisory boards to promote services to the North Queensland area and the field of Neurosurgery. He has held a number of other Hospital and health committee positions and made significant voluntary contributions to community groups and medical practitioners in developing countries. Dr Eric Guazzo was appointed to the inaugural Townsville Hospital & Health Board May 2012 to May 2020. He was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for his services to Medicine & Neurosurgery in the 2013 Queens Birthday Honors and was the 2021 recipient of the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia Medal for his extraordinary contribution to the Society and Neurosurgery, especially in provision of Neurosurgical services to North Queensland communities.
Dr Guazzo is active in medical, nursing and allied health undergraduate and postgraduate education. He holds the appointment as Associate Professor at the James Cook University medical School. His research interests are in the management of traumatic head injury and spinal cord injury and repair, the latter the subject of his research doctorate.

- Fellowship in Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS,1992)
